  • Wisdom, knowledge and understanding – Pastor Joseph Ice

Our midweek service on March 12, 2025, was an enlightening session led by Pastor Joseph Ice, who delved into the fundamental differences and connections between wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. He emphasized the importance of applying knowledge correctly, stating that wisdom is the right application of knowledge and that true wisdom cannot exist without understanding.

Key Takeaways:

  • Wisdom is the deployment of knowledge. Simply having knowledge is not enough; one must use it wisely to make the right decisions.
  • Understanding precedes wisdom. Before wisdom can be applied, one must first understand how knowledge works.
  • You think in words, not just alphabets. This highlights the significance of comprehension over mere recognition of letters.
  • God does not want you to enter business relationships unwisely. Making informed and wise decisions is crucial to success and spiritual growth.
  • The Bible is rich with references to knowledge. However, it is crucial to differentiate between knowledge, wisdom, and understanding.

Defining the Terms:

  • Knowledge – Refers to information. To know something is to be informed.
  • Wisdom – The right application of knowledge, which requires insight and discernment.
  • Understanding – The ability to interpret and see the connection between pieces of knowledge.

Biblical Insights on Knowledge:

Pastor Joseph Ice explored five Greek words used in the Bible to describe different types of knowledge:

  1. Gnosis – Spiritual knowledge gained through experience or intuition.
    • References: 1 Corinthians 8:1, 1 Timothy 6:20, 2 Peter 1:3-6.
  2. Epignosis – Experiential knowledge, a deeper recognition of truth.
    • References: Philippians 1:9, Colossians 1:9-10.
    • Example: “Taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8).
  3. Sunesis – A combination of knowledge and insight (discernment).
    • References: Psalm 119:99, Matthew 13:15, Luke 2:46-47.

Final Thoughts:

Pastor Joseph Ice encouraged us to not only seek knowledge but also pray for wisdom and understanding. The Bible is filled with divine truths, but without proper discernment and application, knowledge alone is insufficient. Let us strive to grow in all three areas—wisdom, knowledge, and understanding—to live a life that pleases God and leads to success.
